2009 Waterfowl Journal

Hoping to get lucky and draw into Grand Pass Sunday, Dave Gaulden, Bill Shields, and I met at the Pass at 4:00 and waited for nearly an hour to find that Dave had drawn the last spot again.  Not much of choice as to where, but at least we were hunting.  With a major cold front scheduled to pass through the area during hunting hours, we were cautiously optimistic as we launched into pool 6.  We were nearly setup by shooting hours then settled in for the morning.

We were pleased to see plenty of birds working, but for some reason they didn't like our setup.  They wouldn't decoy, although they would consistently pass by at the far extents of our shooting range.  Rather than sky-bust like many of the others in the pool, we waited patiently for the singles and pairs that seemed to commit a little better.

We made the most of the hunt, as we ended the migration for 15 birds, as mix of shovelers, a ringneck, and a few more mallards than we had seen earlier in the week.  I think the best is still to come, as today was the first day we had seen many big mallards, hopefully signifying there are more on the way.  With a little luck, we'll be able to finish the season out with new birds and no ice!

With the season in full swing, don't forget to give Chris Carson of The Buck Stops Here Taxidermy a call to get his advice on how to care for your ducks or geese until you can get them to him for a fantastic trophy of a successful waterfowl hunt.  Check out Chris's site for examples of his work.
