Science Series: The Illinois State Museum’s Science Series this month features the program “Archaeo/Geological Investigations of the Emiquon Refuge Restoration Project, Fulton County, Illinois,” presented by Dickson Mounds Museum curator Alan Harn. In 2003, Dickson Mounds Museum and The Nature Conservancy began a comprehensive archaeological investigation of the newly developing Emiquon preserve. These studies indicate that today's Thompson Lake is only the most recent in a series of former Illinois River channels that occupied the bottomland. Nearly 70 new archaeological sites were found within the refuge over the last several years, and excavations and soil coring into the bottomland sediments are providing new insights into paleoclimates, bottomland geomorphology, and how early Native Americans adjusted to this constantly changing world. The program is free and open to the public on Wed., Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Illinois State Museum Research and Collections Center, 1011 East Ash, Springfield. For more information, phone 217/782-0061.
Holiday Event: The Illinois State Museum invites youngsters and their families to celebrate the holidays on Sat., Dec. 12 during the ISM Super Saturdays’ “Auld Abe Syne: an 1800s Holiday” from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. December is a month full of holiday traditions, but what about those of Christmases past? Go back in time to learn of the different, old-fashioned traditions of the19th century holidays. The event is especially recommended for families with children ages 4-8. Massac State Park in Metropolis on Sun., Dec. 13 from 1-4 p.m. The Olde Tyme Christmas is a celebration of holiday traditions, with fort reenactors representing the French, Early American and Civil War traditions of Christmas.
